Wrong

On campus today, I walked into an art gallery where there is a photographic exhibit. It's the kind of exhibit where stealing is unlikely, and destruction/desecration is pretty unlikely.
As I was looking around, I noticed there was a security guard watching the exhibit. This is a small exhibit, so the cost of the guard must be a big part of the cost of the exhibit. Shouldn't the academic environment be one where respect and trust is the norm?
To me, having (or needing to have) that security guard there is wrong.

Smart

On Thursday, I was driving south on the Garden State Parkway when I saw an odd-looking yellow car zipping along nearby. I had the chance to take a good look at it, and it was a Smart Car. It was doing 65 mph, so top end doesn't seem to be a problem.
A quick look at the website shows a 90 mph top end, and EPA estimates of 40 city and 45 highway (The 2008 numbers were noticeably worse, and I don't understand why, but think the testing may have changed.)

Sk. Trp.

OK, it's a fairly convoluted way to note that this past weekend, I took an abbreviated ski trip. (Get it?...I abbreviated the words, "ski trip.") Due to my classes, I could not leave until noon on Friday, while my wife and son went up a day earlier.
I had to cut my one day of cross country short, with a blister developing on my right heel. (If I was a tough guy, I'd have popped it, pressed it flat and continued on...and had I had another pair of socks with me, I might well have done that.) As it was, I did an hour plus of solid activity, and felt pretty happy that it was comfortable.

Misguided Expectations of Parents

You can find a good New York Times article on how little scholarship money is available in many sports here.

Math Midterm Today

I'm sweating a little, but very little. My biggest concern is whether I will get done in time (closely followed by whether I will make foolish errors). I seem to be one of the slower workers in class, I think mostly as a result of showing perhaps more work than necessary.
The flu seems pretty well gone, even the cough has mostly subsided, though I can still feel my throat's not quite right.

Post Test Update - I feel pretty good about how I did. One kid left class after what seemed like 10 minutes. It took me 35 minutes to finish, then I took 10 more to check my work. I was still out long before period ended (one hour and 20 minutes).

Coughing 'til My Eyes Hurt

About 3 o'clock on Monday afternoon, I suddenly felt badly. It was a kind of fatigue combined with feeling "off." By Tuesday, it was pretty much all I could do to get to my class. This cold or flu, which seemed to settle in my throat, caused me to cough a lot. It was a kind of dry cough, and was bad enough that at one point, the coughing actually hurt my eyes. The disturbing part of this was that afterwards, I would feel discomfort when I touched my eyes! Obviously, the vigor of coughing hurt me a bit.
What do you think? Brutal sinus pressure, chills, an awful cough - flu?
On two consecutive evenings, I found myself coughing 'til I lost my cookies. That was my alternate title for this post.
I still find myself coughing, but things are much improved. This seems to be more bronchitis, than any kind of real problem. Hopefully, I'll be able to kick this thing in the next several days.
