An Interesting Experiment

This morning on CBS' Early Show (their competitor to the Today Show and Good Morning, America), they showed the results of an interesting experiment. They took a group of people, divided it in two, and then told each group they were invited to an all-you-can-eat ice cream bar. One of the groups was given a large bowl and large spoon, the other received a small bowl and small spoon. Each group was invited to return to the bar for additional ice cream and toppings. The result was that the small bowl group took considerably less ice cream, and were less likely to return for seconds than the large bowl group. The implied lesson here is that smaller plates, bowls and spoons results in eating less. I'd seen similar results elsewhere, so I'm inclined to think that it's good advice.

Hmmm, this doesn't bode well for me using a mixing bowl and a big wooden spoon for my cereal in the morning.

Mike,
Running about 80 miles a week makes your life more forgiving than most. The lesson will be a good one to remember after you retire from high-level running.

I've always heard that eating off of salad plates has the same effect. My trouble is going back for seconds...
