Are You Spanish?

I was substituting yesterday, and was assigned to cover a music class. There were two hispanic girls in there, and I asked one of them if she'd signed the attendance list. The other chimed in, "She doesn't speak English." So, I addressed to her, "Su nombre en la papel?" She replied, "Si." The other then asked me if I was Spanish. I told her no. I consider that I was even asked to be quite a compliment, since I regard my Spanish as lousy. As I've told people, I am functional, but far from fluent.
